The bulbs or tubers from which gladioli grow are not frost hardy, and so can easily be killed in winter. To prevent this, it is worth digging them up when the flowers have finished, cutting off any remaining growth, cleaning the bulbs, and storing them through winter in a cool, dry, dark place. The same is true for other tender bulbs.
