This plant is a deciduous perennial. It is notable for its striking seedheads. The minute flowers are borne in flat-topped umbels, to 10cm across, and are followed by seeds. The feathery leaves are dark greenish-brown, turning lighter and more glacuous as they mature. Although a herb, this is a good plant for the mixed border.

It's shape is described as upright. It grows to a height of 1.8m and 0.45m in width. It has feathery foliage that is brown. It produces flowers during mid summer that are tubular in shape and yellow in colour.

This hardy plant grows to make a clump. It is susceptible to and should be protected from slugs and snails, aphids and mildew.
