Essential Plants 1741.jpg

The hebes are a genus of very useful garden shrubs that come mainly from New Zealand. They are evergreen and produce spikes of small flowers of white, blue, pink or purple. In some species the spikes are short and dumpy and in others long, much in the manner of buddleja. One of their main qualities is that most have a very long flowering season, some even flowering non-stop through mild winters. The leaves are lance-shaped and are quite leathery in texture. Since they are retained during the winter they have an all-year-round appeal. Some species, known as the whipcord hebes, have very small leaves that are pressed to the stems giving them the appearance of a conifer, although, unlike conifers, they have very small flowers. They vary in height from ground hugging plants to tall shrubs. The taller ones can be cut back to restrict their size. The lower ones make excellent ground cover and the more compact ones are suitable for rock gardens. They all make good plants for a mixed or shrub border or for growing by themselves. Many make good container plants. All species and cultivars can be easily propagated from cuttings.
