Essential Plants 1749.jpg

This is a large genus of over 400 species of evergreen trees and shrubs, added to which there are also many garden cultivars. Their attraction lies in their foliage and the berries they carry during the winter. The foliage on most of the popular species and cultivars is prickly, but has smooth margins in many of the other species. Being evergreen the leaves trend to be leathery and many are glossy, a bonus when planted in gloomy positions as they lighten such places. The leaves vary from dark to light green. Many of the cultivars are variegated with yellow or cream, either round the margins or in the centre of the leaves. The female forms produce berries in the winter. The typical berry colour is red but there are also orange and yellow forms. For most hollies both a male and female plant is required to produce berries but there is often no need to plant a male, as there will be plenty in the near neighbourhood. In more isolated gardens both a generally required although there are a few cultivars where this is not required. As well as specimen trees and shrubs, hollies make a good impenetrable hedge.
