Essential Plants poppies.jpg
poppies.gif
This genus of popular garden plants is made up of about 70 species and many cultivars. They are made up of annuals, biennials and perennials. In the main they are made up of hot colours, such as golds, oranges and reds but there are also some softer pastel colours of whites, pinks and mauves. The flowers are all wide saucers that open towards the sun. The petals as they open from their buds are crumpled like tissue paper and look very fragile. In most of the annuals and biennials the flowers only last for a day, but there are usually other buds for the next day. In the perennials, such as P. orientalis, the flowers will last several days. These have much more substance to them and can be very large, sometimes almost up to the size of dinner plates. Poppies are good for any type of border but they must have a sunny position. They generally like a fertile soil, but some can be grown in quite dry and poor conditions, especially the small mountain species. Their colours make them ideal for hot-coloured borders. The annual and biennials are grown from seed. P. orientalis is best grown from root cuttings as it is difficult to divide successfully.
