Essential Plants 1766.jpg

This is a genus of about 40 species of coniferous trees. There are some for all types of gardens. The bigger species, are too larger for the smaller gardens as they can grow up to 30m (100ft or more, but they make good specimen plants where there is room for them. At the other extreme there are a number of cultivars, such as P. mariana ‘Nana’ that grows little more than 45cm (18in) and is eminently suitable for rock gardens and other small gardens. With such a wide range of sizes it is important to check carefully on the ultimate size of the tree before you buy it to ensure it will fit your requirements. Like many conifers the leafs are very narrow and needle-like in appearance and grow all around the shoots. The oval to long cones, appear on the end of the branches. Many of the trees, especially the larger ones are very elegant in appearance with gracefully arching stems and often shaped like the classical Christmas tree. They generally require a fertile but well-drained soil. Increase from seed, except for the dwarf cultivars, which can be increased from cuttings.
