Sweet Pea Matucana was one of the first sweet peas to be introduced to the UK, around 1700 by a Sicilian monk named Francisucs Cupani. Although flowering size is slightly smaller than modern types, these make up for it with their enthralling fragrance. With gorgeous maroon and purple flowers, this climber is superb for arches, trellises and obelisks.

Type: Hardy Annual
Sow: October to January indoors or March to April outdoors
Soil Type: Prefers a welldrained soil in full sun.
Sowing Instructions: Soak seeds overnight in warm water before sowing 1cm (0.5”) deep, 3 seeds per 7.5cm (3”) pot, in free-draining, damp seed compost. Place in a propagator or sealed container inside a polythene bag and place at 20-25C (68-77F) until germination, which usually takes 7-21 days - do not exclude light. Spring sowings can be sown outdoors, 2.5cm (1”) deep, in drills 7.5cm (3”) apart.
Growing Instructions: Overwinter indoor-sown plants should be placed in cooler conditions such as a cold frame before planting out in spring when the ground has warmed, 23-30cm apart. Pinch out once the second pair of leaves has opened and water freely in dry weather, applying well rotted manure occasionally. Remove faded flowers regularly.
