Description
This elegant and unusual Black Bamboo, Phyllostachys Nigra, produces polished, damson-black mature canes with abundant, dark green, lance-shaped leaves. It is a really striking bamboo and naturally forms a dramatic, tall and mostly upright shape to create a fantastic focal point in your garden. The slender arching canes are dark green for the first 2-3 years and, as the canes mature, they become a glossy jet black which look spectacular, especially against a background of evergreen foliage, although they also look stunning grown as a single clump in a lawn.
A beautiful addition to any garden, it is also perfect for a contemporary garden or architectural garden with the lower foliage stripped. Bamboo Black also works well with water where they make striking reflections, although take care as it does not like waterlogged soil.

Although this is not one of the more vigorous and invasive bamboos, it is advisable to restrict the roots using a rigid, non-perishable barrier to prevent the plant from colonising adjacent plantings. Plant in a container at least 45cm wide and deep to give the roots room to spread, and use loam-based potting compost. Keep the containerised bamboo well watered and fed throughout the summer months. Bamboos like a consistently moist soil and a fairly sheltered spot for the best growth, either in sun or dappled shade.
