When the grass in your new lawn has grown to about 5 cm, mow it with a rotary mower. These can be hired if you don't have one. Set the height of the blades so that the grass will be cut to 2.5 cm. If your mower doesn't have a collection box, lightly rake and remove all the clippings. These can be put onto your compost heap. See Workshop How to Make Compost.

If you have made your lawn in late summer and early autumn by either sowing seed or laying turves, to keep it at this height (2.5 cm), you may have to continue to mow through to late autumn. Keep collecting all clippings, as this will help to keep lawn weeds at bay, whatever type of lawn you want to end up with.

During it's first spring, as your lawn gets growing, you'll need to mow it at a rate to match the type of lawn you are aiming for. Depending on this, you may have to gradually lower the cutting height on your mower. There are three basic levels of quality: fine which is the shortest grass, usually with a striped finish, spring cutting height 1 cm, mow once or twice a week; utility, family lawns for games, spring cutting height 2.5 cm, mow once a week; rough, longer grass, spring cutting height 10 cm, mow twice a month.
