How to Choose a Mower

When you go to buy a mower, you'll find these basic types:
Manual
Electric Powered - cylinder, hover, rotary
Petrol-driven - rotary, cylinder
Manual Mowers are suitable for small, tidy lawns They are the cheapest and quietest, requiring energy input from you - a great form of aerobic exercise! No awkward cables. You'll find two types: those with wheels at the sides, and those operated with a chain from a heavy roller at the back. This type make it easier to mow over edges, and also produce stripes on your lawn.
Powered Mowers are either electric and petrol. Electricity is cleaner than petrol but is unsuitable for larger mowers. Long grass and tough jobs can cause electric mowers to overheat. Don't use electric mowers on wet grass. Always use with a Residual Current Device (RCD), which your lead plugs into and which plugs into a socket and automatically cuts the power, if for instance, you mow over a cable. Petrol driven mowers are best for gardens with quite a large amount of lawn. You don't have to worry about trailing cables. But petrol mowers are more expensive to buy and maintain. Look for an electric ignition for an easier start.

Hover Mowers. Uses: small lawns, awkward spaces - shallow slopes, beneath overhanging plants, next to paving. Hover mowers ride on a cushion of air and have a rotary blade. They can be bought in a range of sizes. Most hovers don't have grass boxes, the clippings are chopped up finely and returned to the lawn as a fine mulch.

Rotary Mowers. Uses: uneven ground, areas of long grass, family rather than fine lawns. You can buy both electric powered and petrol-driven rotary mowers in a range of different cutting widths. Some of them have rollers for giving a striped effect. All of them have grass collection boxes and the larger this is, the less frequently you'll need to empty it. Some of the larger rotary mowers have self propelled wheels which make them easier to manoeuvre in corners.

Cylinder Mowers. Uses: for high quality fine lawn, Wimbledon style stripes.
Electric cylinder mowers have narrower cutting widths than petrol-driven, which can make them more difficult to manoeuvre. For really large areas, you should consider a ride-on version.

Mowing Safety Tips. 1. Mower blades should be well protected, but still wear strong shoes when mowing. 2. The blade brakes should stop the blade within 5 seconds of being turned off - see manufacturers' specifications. 3. Mowers should have a lock-off switch which needs two operations to turn on an engine, reducing the risk of a child starting it accidentally. 4. Deadman's handles should be fitted to any powered mower (they are standard on most new models). This is an automatic cut-off which ensures that blades stop and mowers cannot move accidentally. It is held whilst mowing, but turns the engine off when released.
